Benny Andrews

  • Born in rural Georgia in 1930; died in 2006.
  • Studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
  • Moved to New York City to continue his work, often incorporating cut fabric and paper into his oil paintings
  • First solo exhibition was held in 1962 at the Forum Gallery.
  • Demonstrating his strong social conscience, he led art education programs for underserved students through Queens College and local community programs, and implemented a groundbreaking model for teaching art in prisons.
