Studied at Queens College, City University of New York, completing a BA in 1959; MA in Art History from Columbia University in 1960; MFA from Pratt Institute in 1962; and an EdD from Columbia in 1964.
He began working at the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1965; became the founding dean of the College of Fine Arts there in 1971; and was named dean emeritus in 1989; distinguished professor in 1996; and was awarded an honorary doctor degree in 1999.
